Zaner-Bloser Word Wisdom Grade 4: Student Edition

Word Wisdomwill help students to unlock vocabularyin context as they discover the meaning of new words andphrases through using context clues and analyzing meaningfulword parts.

Students will activate prior knowledge,use context clue strategies, and analyze roots as they learnto interpret unfamiliar words in any context. The wordschosen for each level are “Tier Two” academic words thatwere selected based on word frequency studies; these wordsare unlikely to be learned through conversation but appearin written text across subjects.

This student bookprovides a year’s worth of lessons that will help studentsunlock the meaning of 270 new vocabulary words through 9thematic units with 30 words per unit. Units includeindividual lessons that feature a reading passage followedby a context clues strategy and then “Unlock the Meanings,””Process the Meanings,” and “Apply What You’ve Learned”exercises. A review section and a practice test are given atthe end of each unit.

This Grade 4 course includes 9units on the themes of: sight, the Earth, health, behavior,movement, appearance, language/writing, good/bad, place andposition. Concepts covered include using context clues,learning specific Greek and Latin roots such as cur, sur,fortu, plea, serv and others, developing specificreference skills, and more.
